How You Can Connect With Spirit Using Meditation
Many people want to be able to communicate with spirit, whether it’s their loved ones or good friends they know. Sometimes it’s for themselves, other times, it’s for other people. Regardless of the reason, the desire to connect to the energy around us remains strong.
Yet, sometimes I hear about difficulties people have. They ask me how to communicate with spirit or they complain that they can sense spirit around, but can’t understand what they’re trying to let them know. Other times, people tell me they can’t discern between their own imagination and true spirit communication. These are all common issues
One of the most important aspects to connecting with spirit is first allowing yourself to remain in a quiet, calm mental state. If you allow your mind to race around like it may do all day long, then you won’t be able to perceive the very subtle energies and thoughts coming from outside yourself.
You know that little voice in the back of your mind that is so silent, you usually can’t hear it, or just ignore it completely? That’s what spirit communication is like–incredibly subtle and often practically imperceptible.
Yet if you allow your mind to open up to what’s around you and you surrender to what you’re feeling or hearing or seeing in your mind, then you can begin to feel your connection deepen. This requires you to quiet your monkey mind and focus on the tiny awareness that’s building within you–the one that you know isn’t you.
Of course it now seems the big question is, “How do I quiet my monkey mind? How do I focus?” When people think of meditating, many believe they have to get their mind completely silent and eliminate all thoughts out of their minds. The truth is the only people who have no thoughts in their heads are either in a coma…or “dead.”
In truth, our minds can hold only one thought at a time, so the trick is FOCUS. That’s why using techniques like concentrating on the breath (“breath in…breath out…”) or focusing on relaxing each muscle group or doing a guided visualization meditation work so well.
While communicating with spirit also brings you to a light, altered state, you’re actually much more aware and alert than in meditation. There are several keys:
- ALLOW what information you are receiving.
- SURRENDER to what spirit wants to give you. Don’t try to control the type of information or who comes through.
- TRUST what you’re getting.
- PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
If you follow these simple practices, you’ll find your connection will improve. Always know that spirit wants to connect with us just as much as we want to hear from them. They are actually our best teachers, so open yourselves to them. Trust spirit’s highest intentions and superior knowledge, and surrender to the love that it brings. You can begin to do this with meditation.
