How to Learn Clairaudience
Sometimes I absolutely love to have conversations with myself (after all, I’m my own most interesting person, lol). I wind up speaking with myself continuously for a long time about topics that I never would have dreamed of. Then I begin to notice that these conversations occasionally change to topics so esoteric that they seem “otherworldly.”
That’s because they are. The voices I begin to connect with certainly aren’t my own and certainly discuss or come up with ideas that are perfect for that moment. I seem to ask myself (or my “team”) what should I do in this situation or how might something best be handled.
Sure enough, my team tells me a piece of advice they want me to know. Of course, I have to listen carefully or with intention to really absorb their thoughts. Otherwise, my loud and obnoxious logical, analytical, and conscious mind talks over them. Lord knows that's happened far too many times.
Other times, their ideas come from out of the blue, often about a completely different topic or train of thought than I had a millisecond ago. I’ll be minding my own business and then they’re like, “Don’t you think you should be sitting down to work on that second book by now?” I unconsciously look up to the sky (knowing they’re standing right beside me of course, but I just can’t see them) and say “Yeah well…” They don't seem to get the concept that I actually have a life to lead....
Hearing voices in your head that don’t sound like you or your voice is called clairaudience. Many people years ago were thought to be going crazy for “hearing voices in their head.” Of course, we know now that those voices are very real and are most often our spirit guides trying to give us information. Recall that clairaudience is just the auditory facet of clairsentience.
How can you tell that the voices in your head are spirit and not just your own imagination? First, the voices you hear sound different from your own voice. They have a different cadence, rhythm, accent, pitch, and tempo and they’re quite distinct. Usually, they’ll fall into your head when you’re least expecting it and discuss an idea or topic completely different from what you were just thinking about unless of course you intentionally ask them a question.
People sometimes think these voices are evil or bad spirits and get scared or worry something bad is going to happen. You know these are your guides because they are very soft and gentle in their speech–so gentle in fact that usually your own conscious mind speaks right over them.
Furthermore, your guides cannot interfere with your free will, so they only offer hints and gentle advice. If you hear a voice reprimanding you or saying something negative to you or being demanding, that’s your own conscious mind speaking, not spirit.
So how can you learn to hear clairaudiently?
Here are four exercises you can do at home to practice or build your own clairaudience:
- In your daily walk, listen to individual sounds of everything you hear and separate them from everything else (one person’s comments, car horn, lawn mower, bird calls, dog barks, individual’s laughter, etc.)
- When listening to music (especially orchestras), pick out individual instruments and follow them throughout the entire piece; repeat for every instrument
- Bring your attention to sounds around you, even in silence
- Imagine lots of different types of sounds in your mind’s ear (practice with different tastes and smells as well):
- Rain on a tin roof
- Baby crying
- Someone playing piano or violin scales up and then back down
- A steam train with its whistle, coming into a station and stopping
- A dog barking
- A chainsaw buzzing and cutting a tree
- Make up your own exercises...the possibilities are endless
Remember, when you hear voices in your head, pay attention to what they’re saying. They may be very subtle, but they should be offering caring, loving advice, gentle nudges and words of wisdom to live by. If you allow you conscious mind to be quiet, you just may hear them.
