Have you ever had that quiet feeling tug at you—just a nudge, really—and you brushed it off because, well, logic said otherwise?
You’re not alone.
Most of us, at some point, have wondered if that subtle guidance we sensed was truly from Spirit… or just our mind playing tricks on us. And honestly, it’s one of the most common (and most human) blocks on the spiritual path. The good news? That uncertainty is also the gateway to a deeper, richer, and more trusting connection with Spirit.
Let’s walk through it together.
That Whisper You Ignored (Yeah, That One)
I’ll never forget a particular sunny morning. The sky was as clear as could be, my weather app proudly announced a rain-free day, and I confidently slipped into jeans and a short-sleeved shirt. No umbrella in sight.
As I stepped out the door, though, I got this quiet nudge. You know the kind—more of a feeling than a voice: Bring the umbrella.
I laughed it off. “It’s sunny. I must be tired. Maybe more coffee…”
Cue several hours later: I’m walking home, and suddenly, the sky splits open like a scene from a disaster movie. Rain came down in sheets. Thunder roared. Lightning flashed. I was soaked to the bone—drenched, defeated, and very humbled.
That moment was my turning point. Not because I got wet (although I did look like I had swum through a fountain), but because I realized: I had received guidance. I just didn’t trust it.
Spirit Doesn't Shout (But Ego Does)
One of the biggest spiritual myths we unintentionally buy into is that guidance must be dramatic—like a booming voice from the sky or a literal sign falling in front of us. But Spirit? Spirit whispers. Spirit doesn’t barge in uninvited.
Your ego mind, on the other hand, is loud, chatty, and oh-so-persistent. It’s logical. It loves lists and timelines and worst-case scenarios. It’s the voice that says, “You’re probably making this up,” or “Don’t be silly—Spirit doesn’t talk to you.”
But Spirit? Spirit is soft. Subtle. It might come as a sudden peaceful phrase in your mind. A quiet knowing. A flash of an image or a name. Something out of the blue that interrupts your mental storyline.
The ego mind says A leads to B leads to C.
Spirit throws in an R. Completely unrelated. But deeply meaningful.
How to Tell If It’s Spirit (Hint: It’s Quieter Than You Think)
Here’s a simple guide to differentiate between your ego and Spirit:
-
Ego Mind is:
-
Loud, anxious, judgmental
-
Urgent, controlling, fearful
-
Logical and sequential
-
Doubting and self-critical
-
-
Spirit is:
-
Calm, loving, neutral
-
Gentle and subtle
-
Unexpected but deeply familiar
-
Quiet and fleeting, like a breeze brushing past your cheek
-
If you’ve ever heard your name whispered when no one was around, or caught a glimpse of something from the corner of your eye that wasn’t there a moment later, you might have brushed it off as imagination. But what if that was Spirit simply saying, “I’m here”?
The Still, Small Voice That’s Already Speaking to You
One of my favorite practices I call The Soft Voice Test.
Here’s how it works:
-
Sit quietly, just for a minute or two.
-
Ask, “Spirit, what would you like me to know right now?”
-
Listen. Don’t try. Don’t analyze. Just notice.
-
Did something shift—an image, a word, a feeling?
Ask yourself: Did it feel peaceful? Did it come out of nowhere? Was it subtle but somehow certain?
That’s Spirit. That’s your connection.
A Bowl Full of Love (And Proof You're Not Making It Up)
A woman in one of my spiritual circles once told me she kept asking her grandmother in spirit for a sign. But all she kept seeing in her mind was… a yellow mixing bowl.
She shrugged it off. “That’s weird. I don’t even bake.”
Turns out, her grandmother used that exact yellow bowl every Sunday. It was a family heirloom. A silent, loving wink from Spirit—easily dismissed, if she hadn’t taken a moment to trust it.
That’s how Spirit often works. Not with fireworks. But with memories. Feelings. Everyday objects that suddenly glow with deeper meaning.
Trust and Surrender: Your New Mantras
If you take nothing else from this, remember these two words: Trust and Surrender.
-
Trust that what you’re receiving—even if it’s soft, strange, or out of the blue—is not a mistake.
-
Surrender to how Spirit chooses to communicate. It won’t always be the way you imagined. It might come while brushing your teeth, folding laundry, or staring out the window like a kid on the last day of school.
That’s the moment your ego slips aside, and Spirit sneaks in with a loving whisper.
A 30-Day Practice to Strengthen Your Intuition
Want to make this real? Try this:
For the next 30 days, write down every nudge, whisper, odd thought, or “huh, that’s weird” moment you experience.
Don’t act on them (yet). Just record them. Then later, jot down the outcomes. You’ll start to notice a pattern—one that proves you’re already more connected than you realized.
Then, try following a few of those nudges in the next 30 days. Let this become your sacred experiment in trust.
You might be surprised at how Spirit begins to show up… everywhere.
You’re Not Disconnected. You’re Just Remembering.
So often we approach spirituality as something we have to “earn” or “achieve.” But connection with Spirit isn’t something you find outside of you. It’s something you uncover inside.
You’ve always been connected. Always.
Every whisper, every nudge, every quiet moment you choose to believe—it strengthens that bond.
So maybe the question isn’t: “Is this Spirit or my imagination?”
Maybe the real question is: “What if Spirit is already speaking… and I’m finally learning how to listen?”
Sending you love, light, and a big invisible umbrella—just in case.
Until next time,
Keep listening. The whispers are waiting.
