The Gentle Nudge: Knowing the Difference Between Spirit and Imagination
Every so often, something stirs in the quiet. You’re washing dishes, folding laundry, driving in silence, and out of nowhere comes a thought—a message, maybe—and it feels… different.
But then the mind jumps in, as it always does, and asks: Was that spirit… or just my imagination?
It’s a tender question. And if you’ve ever found yourself wondering, you’re not alone. In fact, I believe it’s one of the most natural questions we can ask on this spiritual journey. We all want to know what’s real, what’s from beyond, and what might just be the product of a mind that’s been spinning all day.
Imagination is a beautiful gift. It helps us create, dream, explore possibilities. But it can also be a restless traveler. Sometimes it brings creativity—and other times, it brings worry. Anxiety, too, has an imagination. It repeats itself. It loops. The thoughts feel urgent, intrusive, demanding answers right now. They can be loud, inconsistent, and unkind.
Spirit doesn’t sound like that.
Spirit is calm. Clear. Steady.
It doesn’t rush or badger. It doesn’t feel like it’s barging in. Instead, it arrives like a whisper on the breeze, or a gentle hand on your shoulder—so real, you almost turn around expecting to see someone there.
Where imagination can scatter, spirit anchors.
Where anxiety scrambles, spirit settles.
And most of all, where imagination wonders, spirit knows.
Spirit Has a Signature
You’ll know it’s spirit by how it feels. Spirit carries presence—an energy that’s not yours, but somehow familiar. It’s like someone stepping into the room, even if you can’t see them. The air changes. You change.
The message itself is usually clear. Specific. Sometimes it’s a phrase you wouldn’t have thought of. Sometimes it’s a piece of information you couldn’t possibly know. But it lands inside you like a soft bell that’s been rung. It resonates.
Spirit also has this beautiful tendency to repeat. Not in a frantic or demanding way, but gently. Lovingly. The same thought might return in a dream, in a conversation with a friend, or even on a billboard when you’re driving. Spirit knows we’re human—and we need reminders.
I often say that spirit speaks the language of nudges. It’s never harsh. Never cold. Always compassionate. Always from love.
Imagination Isn’t the Enemy
It’s important to say this: imagination isn’t something we need to shut down. In fact, it’s a gateway. Spirit will often use our imagination to get through to us. It may show up as a sudden image in your mind, a scene you didn’t expect. Or you might feel pulled to write something you don’t even understand yet.
That’s okay. Let it flow.
But learn to feel the difference between the frenzied urgency of imagination under stress… and the quiet certainty of spirit’s presence.
Imagination often asks:
“What if something goes wrong?”
“What if I’m making a mistake?”
“What if I fail?”
Spirit asks:
“Are you listening?”
“Will you trust me?”
“It’s time.”
And deep down, you know which one you’re hearing.
Tuning In: How to Recognize Spirit’s Voice
Over the years, I’ve found a few ways to quiet the noise and listen more deeply:
1. Create stillness
Spirit doesn’t compete for attention. It waits. Set aside even five minutes a day to be still—no agenda, no expectation. Just breathe. Listen.
2. Notice repetition
If you keep hearing the same message in different ways, pay attention. Spirit is patient, but persistent.
3. Trust how it feels
Spirit doesn’t flood you with fear or urgency. Even when the message is serious, it’s delivered with grace.
4. Ask
Yes, really. Just ask: “Was that you?” Then wait. You might feel a confirmation—a warmth in your chest, a shiver, or a wave of emotion. Spirit finds ways to affirm what’s true.
If you’re reading this, chances are spirit is already speaking to you. Maybe it has been for a while.
The difference between spirit and imagination isn’t about logic. It’s about feeling. About energy. About recognition.
Imagination is powerful—but spirit is purposeful.
So the next time something stirs in you… pause. Feel. Ask.
If it’s spirit, the message will stay with you. It will echo gently in your heart, like a familiar voice you can’t quite place—but know you’ve heard before.
And when you’re ready to listen, truly listen, you’ll realize:
You were never imagining things.
You were being loved.
You were being guided.
You were never alone.
Journal Prompts
To help you connect with your inner knowing, here are a few journal prompts:
-
Have I received a message lately that felt like it came from outside my own thoughts?
-
What does spirit feel like to me—where do I notice it in my body?
-
When has my imagination been helpful? When has it felt anxious or intrusive?
-
What would it look like if I fully trusted a message from spirit?
