When Life Gets Hard: How to Trust Spirit in the Middle of It All

Connect With Spirit·Chris Lippincott·May 30, 2025· 3 minutes

Let’s be honest: life doesn’t always go as planned.

Sometimes the unexpected shows up like an uninvited guest—loss, confusion, overwhelm, disappointment. One day, you’re moving forward with clarity and purpose, and the next, it feels like the ground has shifted underneath you.

When that happens, it’s easy to spiral. To question everything. To wonder: Why is this happening? Where is Spirit now? Am I really supported?

But here’s the truth I’ve come to trust, even in the messiest moments:

Spirit doesn’t disappear when life gets hard. It leans in closer.

The challenge is, we often can’t feel it when we’re in pain or fear. Our nervous system tightens. Our thoughts race. We try to control, fix, or “figure out” what went wrong. And in doing so, we sometimes forget the one thing that can truly bring us back home—surrender.

Not surrender as in giving up, but surrender as in softening. Releasing the need to know it all right now. Breathing into the unknown with just enough willingness to say:

“Okay, Spirit. I don’t understand this, but I’m listening.”

Here are a few ways to do that when things feel especially hard:

1. Breathe and Come Back to Your Body

Your body is the bridge. When your thoughts feel like a tornado, your breath can ground you. Place your hand on your heart. Inhale slowly. Exhale fully. Feel the warmth of your own presence. Spirit speaks through the body as much as the mind—sometimes even more.

2. Speak to Spirit Like a Friend

You don’t need fancy prayers or perfect words. Just talk. Whisper your fears. Cry your questions. Rant if you need to. Spirit can handle all of it. And in the speaking, something shifts: connection begins. You remember you're not alone.

3. Ask a Simple Question: “What’s the next loving step?”

Not the full plan. Not the 10-year vision. Just the next loving step. Trust is built in small, repeated choices to stay connected, even when the path isn’t clear. Spirit often reveals guidance one gentle nudge at a time.

4. Let It Be Okay to Not Know

Spiritual trust isn’t about always feeling good. It’s about staying open even when you don’t. It’s about creating space for uncertainty, sadness, anger—and peace, hope, and grace. All of it belongs. All of it is sacred.

5. Look for the Tiny Miracles

A song that plays at the perfect time. A friend who checks in out of the blue. A sunrise that reminds you light still exists. These are Spirit’s breadcrumbs. When life is hard, miracles don’t always roar—but they do whisper. Pay attention.

6. Remind Yourself: This Won’t Last Forever

You’ve made it through hard things before. You’re still here. Still breathing. Still growing. Trust that this too—whatever this is—has meaning, even if you can’t see it yet. Sometimes Spirit’s greatest gifts are wrapped in the messiest packages.

In the end, trusting Spirit isn’t about never struggling. It’s about choosing to believe you’re not walking through it alone.

So if life feels heavy right now, know this:

You are held.
You are guided.
You are loved—right in the middle of the mess.

And Spirit? It’s still here. Always has been. Always will be.
